For Hayley and Matt Rothery, discovering that they have been shortlisted for not only one, but two Local Business Awards is at once both incredibly exciting and humbling.
“There were 105 semi finalists for the ‘Outstanding New Business, Penrith City’ category of the 2023 Local Business Awards, and Rov’s Rubbish Removal is one of only 15 finalists,” explains Hayley.
“This is quite incredible considering we only founded Rov’s Rubbish Removal three years ago during the COVID lockdowns.”
The building of a business during COVID
“After a decade working in customer service and project management, I went on maternity leave at the start of 2020, “ says Hayley. “Then COVID hit and we all went into lockdown!
“With everyone stuck at home they were either doing renovations around their house or shopping online. This created a huge problem with waste and rubbish disposal because the tips were closed, so packaging materials and building waste were piling up everywhere.
“Matt had previously worked with a rubbish removal company so we decided to set up Rov’s Rubbish Removal as a side hustle to help builders and households to easily and efficiently dispose of their waste.
“The demand for our waste disposal services was so strong it quickly went from a side hustle to our full time business …
“And we haven’t looked back since!”
Customer service is at the heart of everything we do
According to Matt Rothery, relationships and flexibility are one of the key reasons why Rov’s Rubbish Removal has been so successful, so quickly.
“My experience in my career so far is that people base a business around a product rather than the service and there is a huge gap,” says Matt.
“I have based my business around the customer and service and try to tailor the product around their needs rather than offering a black and white product.
“For example, we’ve deliberately invested in the right fleet of equipment for tight building sites, where side
access is an issue. This is a huge problem for Western Sydney builders who have no room for skip bins on their building sites.
“I think that’s why we are so highly praised, because we will always try and deliver what a customer needs above all.”
“Bigger companies who have around forever are often impersonal, always billing for any extras. We save our customers money by offering proactive and tailored solutions to their residential or commercial waste solutions.”
Our staff are our family. Literally.
When Hayley and Matt tell you Rov’s Rubbish Removal is a family-owned-and-operated business, they’re not exaggerating.
“Although we occasionally use subcontractors and their equipment for larger jobs, the majority of our team are our family members – brothers, cousins, even sometimes my dad!” says Hayley.
“We invest a lot in training our team to the highest standards and by keeping it in the family we know we are working with the same trusted and highly trained team we can 100% rely on to deliver the standard of service our customers have come to expect.
“How well we look after our customers is reflected in our very high level of referral and repeat business.
“Our commercial waste removal for the building industry is around 80% repeat customers and for domestic, household waste removal over 50% is referral business from word of mouth.”
A long history of delivering superb customer service
Having previously won awards with Australia Post while she was the youngest ever Australia Postal Manager, Hayley has a long history of delivering superb customer service and it’s a passion that continues to drive her and her team, every single day.
“We’re so proud of our reputation. We are humble. We work hard and we genuinely care so much about our customers.
“Whether it’s a builder on a deadline who is trying to keep their building site tidy and safe or a residential customer who has recently lost someone and needs to clean out an estate or has even been flooded or fire damaged – we are often there for our customers during periods of great stress and tight timeframes.
“Our team is trusted, capable and compassionate. We know they’ll always do the job with pride and we’ll move mountains to get the job done for our customers.
Matt also couldn’t be prouder of Rov’s Rubbish Removal and his team.
“I am so proud of our growth and what our business has developed into. I am excited for it to continue.
“I have just found out that I am a nominee for ‘Business Person of the Year’ as an individual, as well as our business being finalists in the business awards and it’s just so flattering and exciting for our business to be recognised.
“Hayley and I would both like to say a huge thank you to our team, as well as to all of our customers who have voted for us in the Local Business Awards 2023 and who continue to support our family business.
“We wouldn’t be here without you!”
