Rov’s Rubbish Removal is Proud To Support The Hawkesbury-Nepean Flood Clean Up

From drought to bushfires; pandemic to floods – Greater Western Sydney residents have been faced with one challenge after another recently and Rov’s Rubbish Removal is proud to be volunteering our services to help our local community get back on their feet.

A big flood in a residential area

Homeowners across the Hawkesbury and Nepean regions are waking up to scenes of devastation that haven’t been seen for decades as a result of the extreme weather conditions that battered much of NSW.

The recent floods affecting low lying areas of Western Sydney have been called many things, from “unprecedented” to a “once in a century flood” as flooding in the Hawkesbury-Nepean River system reached levels not seen since 1961.

More accurately though, they’ve been life-changing for thousands of residents left facing a massive clean-up task from piles of green waste that have been left in homes, to assorted debris carried onto properties via the powerful flood waters.

The historic flood levels explained

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology reported that areas around the Hawkesbury-Nepean River system received between 400 to 600 millimetres of rain across a four day span in late March.

To put that in context, Sydney averages 132 millimetres of rain for the ENTIRE month of March.

As a result of the persistent, relentless rain, the Hawkesbury-Nepean River saw its highest levels since 1961 – over six decades ago.

This resulted in the evacuations of over 40,000 people as the Clarence, Gwydir, Mehi, Lower Hunter, Manning and Colo rivers all experienced significant increases in water levels.

Since the start of the heavy rainfall, an overflowing Warragamba Dam has been releasing 450 gigalitres of water per day, causing choke points along the Hawkesbury-Nepean River to flood and bring mountains of green waste and debris onto properties and inside homes. For reference, 450 gigalitres is roughly equivalent to the volume of Sydney Harbour.

Tackling the catastrophic flood damage

As floodwaters engulfed trees, roads and even houses, all types of waste and debris are swept from home to home.

From green waste filling backyards in the form of fallen trees and loose soil to hard waste dislodged by the powerful water – something as small as food waste, to medium-sized waste in the form of damaged outdoor furniture and even large debris like damaged cars and property.

As water levels thankfully recede, the coming weeks and months will continue to pose challenges for homeowners and residents across Greater Western Sydney. Dealing with the damage caused to homes, vehicles and land is challenging enough without the added responsibility of clearing waste, debris and mess.

That’s why the entire Rov’s Rubbish team is committed to supporting our local community to help every flood-affected resident get back on their feet as quickly as possible.
